Potatoes

I have touched on the subject of potatoes, in my first few posts.
Mostly because it was our first crop, and secondly because I
have become potato crazy.

Some of these photo's you might have seen
on other posts, but altogether they simplify
growing potatoes

First you DIG, then you PLANT and then you WAIT!

I have of course simplified the process,
there is chitting, ridging up, watering
and the worries of blight.

When you have a big forest of potato plants,
there is still work to be done, mostly weeding
& watering. Once the forest of potatoes steals
most of the light and moisture weed germination is very
slow.
If mother nature is kind rain every week or so should
keep the need to water down.

When harvest time does come...........
there is lots of work to be done sorting
the potatoes

Some had been damaged in the digging
up, these we had to use first.
Others had marks or damage from scab
or slugs, these were used soon after!

But once they had been left outside
for a few hours in the sun, the 'good ones' were placed inside dry sacks or boxes and stored away for the winter.

These sacks I bought from Marshalls
who offer a good service at a similar price to other companies.
We also reused chip boxes (ask your local pub) and bird seed 25kg paper bags.

The boxes, sacks & bags all kept our
potatoes well.

Some of our potatoes we stored........... a very satisfying day!

If you are thinking of growing something, try potatoes.
For information ask other people, lots of other people and
you ll soon start hearing the same advice and tips.

I have recently found this forum, which covers lots of potato based issues.
